6 kids books that inspire adventure
Here at River Rascal, we believe that kids are born for adventure! There's something profoundly important about children taking risks, spending time in nature and embracing challenges in the great outdoors.
But this isn't necessarily a part of life in the 21st Century.
Risk and adventure used to just happen for kids. Because of the world they lived in, risk was an inevitable part of the day to day life.
Unfortunately, that isn't true anymore; health and safety have reduced risk to the most minimal level possible and technology has driven us to spend the majority of our lives indoors, which has a potentially catastrophic effect on mental and physical health. This means that inspiring our kids to explore the wild and connect with their adventurous spirit is more important than ever.
So, here are our top 5 books for inspiring kids to leave their comfort zones and adventure into the wild!
1. The Atlas Obscura explorer's guide for the world's most adventurous kid by Dylan Thuras and Rosemary Mosco, illustrated by Joy Ang
This book takes you on a thrilling journey around the world showcasing some fascinating and unbelievably unique adventures, from abandoned water parks in Vietnam to empty particle colliders in Texas; this is a book for expanding your adventuring horizons. Illustrated in a comic cartoon style your kids will love finding out about some incredible obscure places.
2. The lost book of adventure from the notebooks of the unknown adventurer
Teddy Keen was wandering through the Amazon with some friends when they happened upon an empty shack, inside they found a metal rusty tin, inside were some perfectly preserved notes and pictures. As they started to read through the contents they realised they had stumbled upon an incredible wealth of information. 'The unknown adventurer' had created a beautiful collection of adventure knowledge. After 2 years of hard work, this collection is now bought to you in a gorgeous hardback 192-page book. From treehouse-building and wild camping to first aid and making a fire, this is the perfect companion for survival and life in the wild. The lost book of adventure is pure gold.
3. Shackleton's Journey by William Grill
Shackleton's Journey is an absolute corker! You might have come across it before but if you haven't read it then I suggest you do. Before you know it you'll be planning an expedition to the South Pole! The story is almost hard to believe, you can't imagine how they persevered in such extreme circumstances and came up with some incredible solutions to life or death situations: at one point they have to flip their boats and live in them whilst they await rescue! The illustrations are also captivating, a perfect place to start for a mini explorer in the making!
4. Great Adventurers by Alastair Humphreys'
Showcasing some of the worlds greatest adventurers this book is a perfect inspirational bedtime read. Amelia Erhart, Ranulph Fiennes and Jacques Piccard are just some of the names of the heroes found in this beautiful collection. If you want a selection of incredible individuals who achieved unbelievable feats of exploration to spark the curiosity and adventuring of your kids, look no further.
5. Rivers by Peter Goes
Be warned, this book will not fit on your bookshelf. Peter Goes is an immensely talented illustrator, his better-known book 'Timeline' traces the history of the human race from the big bang to the 21st Century. In 'Rivers' we're taken on an exploration of the world via its rivers, and the illustration is just as beautiful as in Timeline. This is such a fun and interesting way of unlocking a world of knowledge through the story of the world's rivers.
6. Survivors by David Long
This collection of real-life extreme survival stories is incredibly gripping. Each of the survival accounts tells the tale of an individual who in the most extreme circumstances somehow made it out alive. This is a thrilling book and perfect for showing children how humans can overcome the odds in the most hazardous situations. A favourite is the story of a teenage girl whose plane was struck by lightning and split apart and she fell from the sky into a jungle:
"...Coming out of the clouds she momentarily glimpsed the tops of the trees spinning up to meet her like a patch of giant broccoli..."
What an incredible story!
