Parenting in the Wild #6
I first came across Jacey through the hashtag she's created: #weneedmorewild. That message is so important and you'll realise from this interview that she's definitely given her kid a real love for the wild. Check out her account for some stunning pictures of the Rocky Mountain National Park and use the hashtag #weneedmorewild, because we do need more wild! Enjoy reading.
1) What's your most treasured childhood memory of being in nature?
My dad used to take me fishing when I was little. He taught me to love the outdoors, but some of my favourite memories are of him and I loading up our fishing gear, driving up the canyon in his truck, and throwing our lines in his favourite fishing spot. He passed away when I was 20 so these memories are something I cherish so deeply.
2) Who has inspired you most to take your kids into the outdoors?
I’d definitely say my dad, but my two best friends take their littles all over and they inspire me to keep pursuing my love for the outdoors and share it with my little guy. Also, Instagram has been a huge source of inspiration for me within the outdoor family community I have found there.
3) Where is your favourite place to take your little wild ones?
We love Rocky Mountain National Park. It’s relatively close and I feel comfortable hiking there with just my son and I. I like that we can go for a picnic, go fishing, or do a longer hike in the summer or we can sledge or hike through the snow in winter. An annual pass there was the best investment I made in my first year as a new mama.
4) What is your dream adventure if money wasn't a barrier?
That’s a tough one. There’s a lot of places I’d like to go. When our family is older, I’d love to go to Central or South America together. I also really want to go to Ireland and I’m itching to go back to Alaska.
5) What's your top tip for taking kids into the wild?
My best tip for going into the wild with your little is to prepare the best you can and JUST GO. Sometimes I think the whole idea of taking your family into the wild can be intimidating and overwhelming but getting out there and making it happen is the hardest part.
6) What's your next planned mini adventure with your kids?
We are currently on a little mini mountain getaway in Winter Park, CO. I have plans to get up to Rocky Mountain National Park before all the snow melts though for a little sledging adventure.
7) What's the most useful item you take on an adventure?
I never leave without something to make me feel safe, whether that’s bear spray, pepper spray, a safety alarm, or whatever you feel comfortable using. When I’m alone on the trail with Hudson, I need to have some sort of plan if something or someone dangerous were to approach us.
8) Any book recommendations for inspiration?
Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv is amazing if you haven’t read it.
9) Finally, Forest or Beach?
Forest for sure. I lived next to the ocean for 4 years but still moved back to Colorado. The mountains have my heart.
Amazing! Thanks so much Jacey for sharing some of your story. If you don't already then go and follow her account @jacey.biermann, use her hashtag #weneedmorewild and don't forget to take your bear spray next time you're out on a walk (or badger spray if you're British).
