Parenting in the wild interview #2
Welcome to the second guest interview in our 'Parenting in the Wild' blog series with @alice_isla. Grab a warm drink and enjoy!
1) What's your most treasured childhood memory of being in nature?
Most treasured childhood memories are at our caravan - which is situated in south-west Scotland - on the beach- but with amazing forest grounds too. Every day was spent exploring the site no matter the weather. Another would defo be the times we went skiing, every year since the age of 4 we went as a family and absolutely loved it and still do!
2) Who has inspired you most to take your kids into the outdoors?
My friend Christina. We met while I looked after her little girl in a creche and not long after I had Isla (my now 3-year-old). We lost touch for a while and bumped into each other randomly and she mentioned her new outdoor playgroup she was just starting up. I'm not too sure who inspired me, before this point, to love the outdoors and adventures but I was definitely really excited by the prospect of an outdoor playgroup rather than a plastic-ridden indoor one! She then went on to set up an outdoor Steiner-inspired kindergarten for children aged 3- 7, which Isla now attends, and that just opened my mind to endless possibilities of outdoor activities.
3) Where is your favourite place to take your little wild ones?
I love to take Isla into the woods- Harris usually in the sling too. But also we love spending time on the beach at our caravan site looking in rock pools, making sand castles.. I suppose we love forest adventures in the Winter and tend to be on the beach more in the Summer!
4) What is your dream adventure if money wasn't a barrier?
My dream would be to do a ski season with my family during the Winter, then to travel in the Summer to nice warm climates- maybe Australia !
5) What's your top tip for taking kids into the wild?
Take lots of spares- prepare for every sort of weather condition - there’s no such thing as bad weather if you're dressed appropriately!!
6) What's your next planned mini adventure with your kids?
Our next planned adventure is going to be spending almost all of the summer at our caravan on the beach- we’d usually go a week abroad but we are saving to hopefully go skiing again next January as this year was not possible with a newborn in tow!
7) What's the most useful item you take on an adventure?
My absolute most useful item on an adventure has got to be the sling!! Can’t go anywhere without it!
8) Any book recommendations for inspiration?
I’m such a rubbish reader I have to admit- I much prefer to be doing something other than reading 🙈
9) Finally, forest or beach?
Oh I don’t think I could answer this.. we are like 50/50.. forest in Autumn/Winter beach in Spring/Summer- although I hate how sand finds itself in everything and can create more mess than mud from a forest haha!
Amazing! Thanks so much to @alice_isla, if you're not already following her make sure you do!
